ALL DRIVERS of passenger vehicles and motorcycles who are 50 in 2008 must renew their driving licence this year.
The age limit for renewing driving licences was previously 65. The change aims to better control the “physical and psychological skills” of drivers in Portugal.
Drivers over 50 will also need to renew their driving licences but only when they reach 60 years of age.
The procedures also affect foreigners living in Portugal on a permanent basis for more than six months and whose 50th birthday is celebrated during 2008.
The drivers have to renew their licence during the six month period before their birthday and they are only required to fill a form from DGV, the national driving permits agency, and present a medical certificate confirming their health capability to drive.
The age limit for the remaining categories is not changed and drivers of trucks and buses have their first renewal date when they reach 40.
